Training Recap: Week 6+7+8+9 Escape from Alcatraz

I just wrapped up month 2 of my 5-month training plan. Something that I am learning is that following a training plan is becoming very difficult for me! I’ve been incorporating a lot of Orangetheory into my routine — about 3-4 sessions a week, at the expense of my running training, but what has been sliding is my cycling and swimming. My logic is that I am working on my strength and endurance before putting in more serious time on the trainer and in the pool, but we all know that’s rubbish! I’m missing about 1-2 workouts a week, which makes me a bit anxious.

My goal come June is to toe the edge of the Hornblower in good health, but also to not feel like I should’ve trained more. I want to arrive knowing I’ve done the very best I could’ve done, with the time that I had.

To bump up my cycling, I’m planning on signing up for Rouvy. What’s neat about this app vs. Zwift is that you can actually ride the race course using your trainer. Zwift was fun with the gaming aspect, but I think I might find Rouvy more practical, especially when I can visualize the ride ahead of time. I look forward to getting some use out of it when I return from my work trip next week.

Speaking of work trips, I had planned on meeting up with a coach to help me with my bike handling skills. Seeing as though it is strangely dumping snow in Seattle, I won’t be able to ride. I think I still may meet with her so that I can get some first-hand knowledge about the course and what I’m getting myself into.

Week 6: 3 OTF, 2 indoor trainer rides, 1 swim, 1 downhill ski. (Missed long run)

Week 7: 3 OTF, half marathon, 1 run, 1 trainer ride. (Missed  2 swims.) This week was hectic because it was my best friend’s wedding, and I also had a race.

Week 8: 4 OTF, 2 indoor trainer rides, 1 swim. (Missed 1 swim and a long run.)

Week 9: 4 OTF, 2 indoor trainer rides, 2 swims, 2 runs. No missed sessions!

Since I’ve missed some sessions, rather than taking the taper week, I think I will extend my month 2 workout one more week. (Saying that out loud makes me feel like that is a bad idea.)

One thing that I will really need to look out for during my work trip is nutrition! Breakfast is handled at the hotel, and they have some good options. However, being away from home (and being able to expense any food I want to indulge in) will require some level of self control!

In the meantime, I’m listening to a lot of podcasts and watching lots of videos trying to mentally prepare myself for this…
